OSgrid enters third week of downtime

OSgrid, the oldest grid in the OpenSim metaverse and second-largest by size and active users, has entered its third week of downtime.

“We’re running into an issue with metadata size limitations on the filesystem for assets,” the grid announced in a short post on its Facebook page. So the grid is down for maintenance, whilst we’re trying to sort this. No timeline on a fix yet. Sorry for the inconvenience. We will keep you posted.”

The most recent update was a week ago, and said that the maintenance was 40 percent complete. As of this writing, that percentage has risen to 83 percent, according to a tracker on the grid’s home page.

“The information will be updated approximately every 24 hours by Dan or Umberrock as new data becomes available,” the grid said. “Please note that the progress estimates and reopening date should be considered approximate. The maintenance process may speed up significantly at times or slow down due to unexpected technical requirements, data verification, or infrastructure checks.

As of this writing, the maintenance is expected to conclude on June 21.

The grid is still considered active for the purposes of our monthly stats report, since it’s been online in the previous month. However, its active users numbers are dramatically down, since people can no longer log in.

“Given OSgrid’s current downtime, I’d like to remind people who bought items in Kitely Market and had them delivered to their OSgrid avatars that they can have those orders redelivered to their Kitely avatar,” Kitely CEO Ilan Tochner told Hypergrid Business. “Kitely provides a reliable home for people and enables buyers from Kitely Market to regain access to their lost purchases if their grid shuts down.”
