Wizards of the Coast is officially apologizing for the release of its latest Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair. The latest Secret Lair Zeta Set was the latest drop from the experimental Chaos Vault line. It was also a launch where just about everything went wrong.

Wizards of the Coast Apologizes for "Disaster" Launch of Secret Lair Zeta Set

The Secret Lair Zeta Set Apology

On September 2nd, Wizards of the Coast launched the Secret Lair Zeta Set. The central gimmick of this Secret Lair drop was that the cards in the drop would emulate the look of playtest cards from the earliest stages of the iconic card game. Every card in the drop appeared handmade, printed on paper, and featured a blend of public domain photography and original photos from the American artist collective MSCHF.

If you bought the Zeta Set, you would get one booster pack containing seven random cards. Three common, two uncommon, a wild card of any rarity, and one rare or mythic rare card.

On paper, this Secret Lair drop was bound to cause high demand. Secret Lair drops happen in limited quantities and are generally sold on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, RNG matters: getting cards from random packs inherently increases the demand and potential value of cards pulled from the packs. Factor in the rising problem of scalpers in the TCG space, and this drop was bound to run into problems.

Wizards of the Coast attempted to mitigate this with a few choices. First, they gave fans a 24-hour warning ahead of launch; a departure from how Chaos Vault drops happen at random. Second, anyone who entered the queue an hour early to order a pack would be chosen at random. What happened was long queue times, inconsistent sales confirmations, and the entire stock being sold out within minutes.

It was, to quote an official apology statement from Wizards of the Coast, a disaster. The studio is currently investigating what went wrong with the launch and encourages anyone who was queued to speak with the Customer Support team regarding their orders. As for what the ultimate cause of this debacle is, WOTC has stated it "may take a little while" for them to figure it out.
